THE FOG IS LIFTING / LARS WALDEMAR
MARCH 27TH - MAY 20TH 2024
On a fateful day at the beginning of 2020, a new and unknown virus has spread worldwide, and has now made its way into Denmark. Everything is turned upside down. From one moment to the next, everything shuts down and social contact is reduced to a minimum. It is almost as if an imaginary fog descends, thick and dense over our society and radically changes our everyday life. The work's title refers to Danish composer Carl Nielsen's work of the same name. Just like the composition, which describes the moment when the fog is dissolved by the sun's rays, this artwork describes the time when the pandemic’s grip on society is finally loosened and the veil of fog that has settled around us all dissolves.
In this installation, Lars Waldemar uses and processes the plexiglass dividers, that shielded us from each other in the public space during Covid-19, to tell the story of our journey through the fog towards a return to normality. In addition to drawing references to the pandemic, the work is, by virtue of the material, also a comment on our consumption of plastic and the climate crisis. A comment laced with hope.
The solemn but hopeful atmosphere created through Lars Waldemar's installation is supported musically by a new recording of Messiaen's Le Banquet Céleste, played by organist Jørgen Ellekilde from Aalborg’s cathedral Budolfi.
