KN1-15: FIFTEEN ART GALLERIES
AUGUST 18 – AUGUST 27 2017
KN1-15: FIFTEEN ART GALLERIES was the most noticeable event of the Art Festival. It was a new innovative exhibition concept with fifteen large exhibition cubes that each contained an installation or solo exhibition created by one of the fifteen invited artists or artist groups.
The exhibition cubes measured 240 x 240 x 240 cm and were all painted off-white. They were afforded with one large window, as well as a small hidden door. A solar collector was placed on the roof, which provided power to two neon lamps in the cube, and which made these miniature exhibition spaces light up at night.
The exhibition spaces were installed centrally in the centre of Aalborg, and they were visually accessible 24/7. Moreover, they were staffed a few hours each day, so the audience could gain access and experience the artworks up close.
Additionally, Kunsthal NORD planned guided tours to the fifteen cubes as part of an outdoor audience programme with performances, art salons, happenings, artist talks and debate forums, which the residents of Aalborg freely could participate in.
Fifteen artists or artist groups, from Berlin, Copenhagen and Jutland respectively, was carefully selected to create new installations and experiments incorporating a critical edge to challenge boundaries, and to participate in inspiring dialogues across regional, national and international divisions.
‘The white cube’ was selected as constructive and critical opposition to Kunsthal NORD’s post-industrial architecture, rough aesthetics and non-commercial profile. The hope was that these fifteen ‘perfect’ exhibition spaces in the middle of Aalborg would help in developing art, the concept of art and not least the perception of art in a city that is rapidly developing.
Information material on the project’s artistic content and a guide of the fifteen exhibition cubes coulf be picked up in the black INFO-cube on Gabels Torv or in Kunsthal NORD.
You could also ask one of the many exhibition guards wearing a T-shirt specially designed by Heine Kjærgaard Klausen.
