INSIDE COLOUR
AUGUST 1 - OCTOBER 17, 2020
BODIL NIELSEN
Kunsthal NORD presents the exhibition Inside Colour which is a new encompassing installation by Bodil Nielsen integrated in the art center’s industrial architecture. The exhibition gives insight to Bodil Nielsen’s many years of artistic research into the role of colour in the visual arts, and centers around the potential of fine arts in creating sentient and conceptual associative spaces. The installation has been created in the artist’s studio and completed on site in Kunsthal NORD.

Transparent and tightly woven light reflecting fabrics greets us in the first as we enter the premises of Kunsthal NORD. Soon after an overlap is created to the eye between the hanging fabrics, the matt coloured walls and carved pieces of carpets, which appears further ahead in the room. The colours of the fabrics are predominantly bright and light in colour and hang from thin silvery grey aluminum tubes and rectangles in steel wires from the ceiling and shapes floating triangles. The skylight tones the coloured wall surface on the left side of the room brighter or darker depending on the sun’s intensity outside. From the light violet and white mixed tones in the first room it is possible to gaze into Room 2, where a comprehensive vertical transparent surface of blue organza marks a center in the high-ceilinged room. A coloured wall surface, which in tone of colour is calibrated gently to the fabric, are almost touching the fabric, making the colour diffuse into the space. With colour, scale, light and tactility a weightlessness is brought forward in the space in which the viewer in their sphere of relations, feelings and impressions moves in.
Through a precisely composed configuration of sentient and conceptual spaces, Inside Colour explores in contexts between the interrelationships of colours and textures, and how they activate our individual and shared cultural visual language. The exhibition thus unfolds arts potential as a space for imagination. Bodil Nielsen’s installation moves in a spectrum which extends from the artworks potential for interpretation and moving the audience by virtue of its references, to the immediate untranslatable sentient experience and absorption of an artwork.
Bodil Nielsen is an artist living in Copenhagen. Through painting, graphics, and installation she explores the artworks possibility for ambiguous perception in the mental and sentient room.
