ENIGMAS ✂ Nicole Kouts
ENIGMAS is the first solo exhibition of Nicole Kouts in Denmark. The multimedia artist presents two original works that were based on a collection of stimuli, reflections and observations from a three-month experience living in Aalborg in an autonomous residency process, which resulted in an in-depth research on the relationship between landscapes as labyrinths and images as enigmas that can materialize and/or simulate the intricate desire to glimpse an imagery compositions of the memories from a place.
The series ENIGMAS (2023) is composed of 14 collages made from magazine and newspaper clippings found in used book stores. The combination of images are in black and white, grayscale and sepia tones, as the cut-outs were mostly from materials from the beginning of the last century. Through the fusion of visual properties of the figures, new spaces and times emerge as a delicate poetry of forgotten images. The videoperformance Mirrors For Tired Eyes (2023) portrays the usage of "lazy glasses'' in bucolic outdoor landscapes, an object with a mirror mechanism that allows the user to read or watch something while sitting or laying down by an angle tilt. A video essay on the contemporary distortion of the nature of vision, a complex enigma by itself.
ENIGMAS will be showing in TURBINEGALLERIET by Kunsthal NORD. Open all days from 7AM-11PM
