[X]PRESSION // group exhibition

01.10.2023-31.10.2023

In a series of workshops, local young artists have created works that express depression - and ask whether art can be part of the cure. The works can now be experienced in an exhibition in the pink dome.

Depression is a thief who steals from people,
art gives back

Depression is a desert trek that you go through alone. It is an exhausting journey through a desolate landscape, where you cannot find rest and where nothing seems to be able to help you further. On the horizon you only see more of the same. As you wander, you begin to create a narrative in which you yourself are the villain:

It is my own fault,
For,
If I don't
If I just
Now if I could

Often, those suffering from depression experience that they lose control over their own situation, as well as the narrative of who they are. This happens when instead of pointing to the depression as a disorder that affects them deeply, they point to themselves as the reason they feel bad.

Through a collaboration with DepressionsForeningen and Headspace Aalborg, Kunsthal NORD has developed a series of workshops and tools where the basic symptoms of depression are expressed through the creation of works of art. The exhibited works are thus created by young artists who themselves have had the symptoms of depression in their lives. The basic idea behind the workshops is that the participants learn how, through artistic work, they can externalize the symptoms and effects of depression, and thereby learn to separate the depression and themselves.

The works in the exhibition are products prepared over 6 weeks by the project's participants and are the results of their own reflections and interpretations of how the depression has affected them:

Emotions
Understanding the body
Energy and social relations
Thoughts
The narrative about themselves

[X]pression illuminates how complex depression is for those who experience it.
In the exhibition, you can gain a deeper understanding of depression, the project and how and where you can find help if you are in the same situation yourself. Finally, the exhibition will show the potential role of art in helping to solve society's increasing problems with mental well-being.

The exhibition is shown in a specially constructed dome, produced by the workshop participants in collaboration with Råt&Godt in recycled materials, through consultation and help from Jørgen Stendal Mortensen (Artist in Ambience).
